MAINZ, GERMANY

Mainz, located along the Rhine river,  is the capital and largest city of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate in Germany. I had a spontan day trip to Mainz in early April, but the weather was still humid caused by scattered showers during the day. This was actually the second time I came to Mainz. First time was to visit the well-known Mainz University with my friend. And this trip was to explore the old city.

With a ride lasting not more than one hour by train from Frankfurt main train station, I arrived in Mainz. To me Mainz is really the city of art. Its stunning old architecture appeared almost everywhere in the centre. Along the way I even saw many people enjoying painting the cityscapes, which was a big surprise to me.

Some places worth visiting:

  • Christuskirche: quiet and serene place. To me this church’s architecture is somehow similar to the Sacré Coeur church on Monmartre in Paris.

  • Rhinepromenade: give yourself some time to relax by walking along the Rhine river. There are several coffee shops and a small park along the way. You can also enjoy the view of the Theodor Heuss Bridge connecting Wiesbaden and Mainz.

  • Marktplatz: featuring all walking and cobble stone narrow streets, you can find many local food stalls and pretty gift shops here.
